Vishnu Sahasra Nama

Om Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya Om

Pronunciation

In each of the pages, you will find two headings concerning Pronunciation. The first one is titled “Pronunciation Guide” and gives some help on pronouncing the shloka, of which the particular name is a part. This pronunciation guide is NOT a grammatical split up of the words involved in the shloka. It is just a method to help newbies to pronounce the shloka correctly. Read the two lines slowly and carefully and you should be able to pronounce the shloka correctly. Further, this pronunciation guide is for chanting the entire shloka continuously. If you stop midway, the meanings will be different (and possibly wrong).

For example, shloka number 4

sarvah-sharvah-shiva-shthaanur-bhoothaadir-nidhira-vyaya-ha |

sambhavO-bhaavanO-bhartaa-prabhavah-prabhu-reeshwaraha || 4 ||

The actual words involved are sarva-ha, sharva-ha, shiva-ha, sthanu-hu, bhoothadi-hi, nidhi-hi, avyayaha, sambhava-ha, bhavana-ha, bhartaa, prabhava-ha, prabhureeshwara-ha.

The pronunciation guide does not bring out the above words accurately. It only helps if you read the complete line slowly and carefully, WITHOUT pausing.

The second guide is named “Pronunciation” and will help one pronunce the particular name correctly. Again, read slowly and WITHOUT pausing. Also, the title of the page does not include the Visarga (if the name contains it) whereas the pronunciation section will have the same. That is because when we chant just the particular name, the visarga is to be included. That’s how it works in Sanskrit!
